Conference details

The West Midlands Young Planners Committee is thrilled to be hosting the Young Planners' Conference 2023 at Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham B4 7XG on October 13-14, 2023. This year's conference will focus on the topic of ‘Planning for Legacy: Regeneration and Place in the West Midlands.’

This conference promises to be an exceptional event, offering delegates the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of high-calibre speakers, participate in interactive sessions, and express their perspectives.

During the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of quality speakers from both the public and private sectors, participate in interactive breakout sessions and exchange ideas.

The West Midlands region has recently played host to two major events, the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the UK City of Culture 2021, which serve as symbols of the ongoing transformation of the region's major centres. Against this backdrop, the conference theme of "Planning for Legacy - Regeneration and Place" will explore the critical role of planning in securing sustainable development in the context of public and private sector investment before and after such major events. The conference will delve into the local, regional, and national focus on "levelling up," with a particular emphasis on our town and city centres.

The West Midlands conurbation comprises a diverse patchwork of towns and cities and is home to Birmingham, the UK’s second city. The region has undergone transformative economic, environmental and social change since the 1990s, with local authorities and their partners seeking to deliver the regeneration of its town and city centres in particular.

The theme of “Planning for legacy - regeneration and place” is the golden thread for our speaker panels, breakout sessions and study tours, centering on:

  • The role of transport infrastructure and planning in unlocking urban regeneration and economic development projects;
  • The impact of large-scale cultural and sporting events in rebranding places, changing perceptions and supporting social cohesion; and,
  • The role of public-private partnerships in realising sustainable development.

The conference will focus on the lessons learned from the West Midlands context. However, it is important to note that Young Planners will have the opportunity to gain valuable insights that are applicable to their respective contexts:

  • Holistic regeneration: the Government’s focus on addressing socioeconomic inequalities between regions and within places requires a joined-up mindset and breadth of skills in terms of understanding how local economies work, how local assets can be mobilised to attract inward investment, foster social wellbeing and how to join up with other disciplines: economic development, sustainability/environment, skills and public health.
  • Mobility and sustainability: whether it’s dealing with a new high-speed railway, road scheme or local active travel measures, Young Planners need to understand how to consider mobility at the local, sub-regional and national levels and how foresight can realise new opportunities.
  • Visioning, strategic planning and mobilising stakeholders: Young Planners need to understand how politics, technical planning, stakeholder engagement and public/private investment can be brought together to mobilise resources to plan for a more sustainable future.

The gala dinner

The gala dinner will be hosted on the Friday evening at The Council House banqueting suite, an elegant Victorian venue located at Victoria Square in the heart of Birmingham City Centre.

This event presents a unique opportunity for attendees to network and celebrate an evening of dinner, drinks, and music with other Young Planners from across the UK.
