2019 winners

The Green Heart was commissioned by the University of Birmingham to provide 5 hectares of public realm at the heart of the campus, featuring 'movement corridors', seating areas, green areas, study areas and space for outdoor performances.

Chair of the judging panel and Vice Chair of the RPTI West Midlands 2019 Luke Hillson said of the project "Using the clock tower as the centre focus to organise and arrange a highly co-ordinated public realm, while ensuring that people and social interaction are the driving force behind the proposals, has resulted in a high quality project. The University of Birmingham now has a 'Green Heart' which undoubtedly lives up to its name."

Kate has had a hugely positive impact on the planning world in the West Midlands; she is an ambassador of the RPTI through her work with the Young Planners Committee, Planning Ball Organising Committee and Regional Activities Committee; she is a builder of networks; and as the Co-Chair of Women in Planning West Midlands, is an avid promoter of diversity, equality and inclusion across the profession.

In the view of the judges, Kate has shown an exceptional commitment to the profession: she is an exceptional role model with an excellent understanding of planning, bringing a creative approach to many projects. She is driven and passionate about the work that she does and is a champion for inclusivity and diversity within the industry.

Ray was a Team Leader in the Planning Casework Unit at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and was awarded an MBE for his public service in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Ray has contributed hugely to the West Midlands Regional Activities Committee, in particular to its CPD programme, being of invaluable help at each event and recognisable to all our members who have attend one! Ray will act as Honorary Treasurer for the region next year.
